Yum Yum Dim Sum

Soup Dumplings

Dear Foodiez,

Living in the “loft district” I’m often given many suggestions for Chinatown, since it’s pretty much my back yard.  One evening over dinner with neighbors in my building a collective group of foodiez swore, with their hands to raised to God, that Dim Sum Garden on 11th St is the best Dim Sum!   Dim Sum for Sunday brunch is my favorite time, but Dim Sum is more about what you eat, not when you eat it.

What I thought after the JUMP!!!“Really, the place under the over pass, next the Chinatown buses, near Wawa that looks like I’m going to det hepatitis is a good restaurant?  The place with all the neon signs?  The one that looks so ghetto it hurts?”, was pretty much verbatim what I asked.  They roared laughing and swore to me that not only was it clean, but the food was remarkable.

Punctured Soup Dumpling

Online reviews and my neighbors suggested the Soup Dumplings.  My neighbors even gave me a tutorial on how to eat them!  First, what’s a soup dumpling?  It’s pretty much as it sounds.  It’s a dumpling….with soup in it.  HUH?  How do they do that?  I have no clue.  However, they’re delicious!  I absolutely love asian dumplings.  Steamed, fried, and now, apparently, soupy!  The dumpling contains pork and a deep, rich broth.  The dough is delicate as it’s only steamed and is somewhat thin.  There’s a trick to eating them.  You need to use chopsticks to pick the dumpling up and gently slide your spoon underneath.  Next, puncture it with a chopstick and suck the broth out – BE CAREFUL – it can be HOT!!!  After you’ve sucked it dry, you can safely eat it without scalding your mouth!  If you enjoy dumplings when you go out for asian food, you’ll love this Dim Sum staple!

Sesame Noodle

I was so psyched, when I saw their daily special was Sesame Noodles!  Thin egg noodles covered in a sesame, peanut sauce!  Served cold, with a few thin slices of pickled ginger!  Always a favorite of mine! I love pasta and I love peanut butter – it’s like two of my favorite worlds colliding!  Could eat them all day long and these were really delicious!

Best part, it all cost a total of $10!  No lie, and I had a hot tea!  They have big tables so you can go with a group of friends – friends that have really low expectations about the decor of a restaurant ;-) .

soup dumplings would be so good on this chilly end-of-summer evening. my taiwanese friends told me that they chill the broth until it’s congealed; place a scoop in the center of the dough with the pork meatball and do that fancy little wrap job.
