Continental Breakfast Fit for A Baller

“Now personally, My favorite part is all of the disposable materials in this picture. It’s like just one big photo of high fructose corn syrup, refined white flour, trans fats, various forms of petroleum by products and A BANANA!” the NOSH GUY

“Free continental breakfast! Ballers! This is, surely, how Beyoncé and Jay-Z travel. PS, the woman running the breakfast, Sonia, would like you all to email her boss so she can get a damn raise.”… R. ERIC THOMAS

“mmmm… this is a tasty burger…..”

Betty's Burger

Dear Foodiez,
For those of you not cool enough to get it, I’m quoting Samuel L Jackson in the cult classic Pulp Fiction.

CLICK HERE to see a 12 second clip of Mr Jackson delivering his classic line.

Last Sunday, someone said “burger” in my presence and I couldn’t get the word out of my head.  All day long, with every hunger pang, BURGER popped into my head.  BURGER, BURGER, BURGER, it was like I was at a political rally and the candidate was BURGER.

Now, I know the Philly Burger Scene, please don’t make me rehash the great Foodrulez Burger Warz of ’10.  I’ve got favorites all over the city.  500 degrees, Village Whiskey, North 3rd, yada, yada, yada.  But I wanted something new….. I recalled this little joint over on 11th st.  Smokin’ Betty’s - go ahead, click on that I hyper link, I double dog dare you.  DO IT!  Smokin’ Betty’s - now tell me.  If you were hungry for a burger and you saw that picture on their homepage.  Just ask yourself, “Would you go to Smokin’ Betty’s?”  Damn right chew would!

All imma tell you is, the burger killed it.  It was what every part of your taste buds wanted it to be after seeing that picture.  Say it Sammy….”mmmm, this is a mighty tasty burger!”

I’ve been to Smokin’ Bettys for brunch – two words EPIC FAIL.  I’ve also been for for wings and ribs – they know what they’re doing with a buffalo wing.

11th and Sansom – Smokin’ Betty’s.  Check it out!

backyard BBQ in philly

BBQ Ribs

Dear Foodiez,

I went to a BACKYARD BBQ in NOLIBS on Sunday!

You all know about the Piazza – North 2nd & Germantown Ave.  Well, its got some funky new neighbors.  Arrow Swim Club and Chenango Restaurant.

Arrow and Chenango are owning their spot in NOLIBS – they’re blending right into the landscape.  Arrow offers a chic look mixed with gritty graffiti and a mini trailer, as a towel cabana, just  to add to the grunge feel.

Chenango Restaurant offers a BACKYARD BBQ on Saturday and Sundays.  They know what they’re doing – NOLIBS isn’t a fancy schmancy ‘hood.   I think PYT showed them the way, PYT has some of the city’s best “throw down burgers”!

Well, child, let me tell you – this BACKYARD BBQ, served up some blazin’ BBQ Ribs & Chicken.  I’m talkin’, “meat fallin’ off the bone” good!  Let me tell you a little somethin’ about ribs.  The NOSH GUY knows him some ribs – I worked at a rib joint for 4 years of college.  BJ’s Steak & Ribs, a 30 year old institution located in upstate PA.  We had customers who would travel hours to get our ribs!  Anyway, I digress, back to Chenanago…..

…. Seriously, the ribs, the chicken were stupid good!  The coleslaw – it kinda made me cry…. it took me back … back to 1990, when I worked at BJ’s, when I had a full head of hair, when I was 20, when Clinton was President….. ok… sorry, I’m back.  The coleslaw was stupid good!  Then there was the potato salad, the grilled corn on the cob.  Kids, I promise, if you’re hungry for some down home BBQ check out Chenanago.

We ate inside, but they have a killer patio with old school picnic tables, fire pit (that they light at night), and some killer chill/lounge beds.  I’m so down with the idea of kickin’ back some night and watching a blazin’ fire!

New York Can’t Do Down Home

Went to Eatery on 8th Ave in NYC. I saw meatloaf and wanted some down home comfort. What I got was heartburn!

Sorry New York, stick to haute cuisine. Leave the down home, belt loosening fattening meals to Alabama, Kentucky, oh, and a Philly…. You tell ‘em Miss Honey’s Sit-N-Eat!

ms tootsie’s

A few friends and I decided to spend Easter together, a friend suggested Ms. Tootsie’s.  He had a devilish grin when he said,”they’re having an all you can eat brunch.” Now, If you don’t already know, Ms Tootsie’s is an up and coming soul food restaurant in Philadelphia.  I’ve never been, but the possibility of ALL YOU CAN EAT ribs, collard greens, mac -n- cheese was; oh so wonderful.

It was a very cool concept, they offered a 3 course, “all you can eat menu”.  There wasn’t a buffet, it was table service,  it was really comfortable. We were allowed to order as many servings of the 2nd course.  (choice of fried chicken, fried fish, ribs, turkey wings with your choice of sides……)

My group of friends decided to skin the 1st course:  The Three Green Salad.  I’m sorry, but when I’m looking at Fried Chicken Cheesy, Cheese Macaroni Cheese – I’M SKIPPING THE SALAD!

I’m embarrassed to say that when the waitress asked me what I wanted to drink, I asked if they had any unsweetened tea, the waitress got  a shocked look on her face and said, “oh no sir, it’s real sweet!”  I was embarrassed for myself at that moment.  Initially we passed on the sweet tea.  However,  as we ordered our second plate of fried chicken, cheesey cheese macaroni and cheese, and collard greens,  we ordered the sweet tea as we roared with laughter – does the sugar content really matter at this point?

We all agreed the Fried Chicken was the clear winner in the main course category!!!  I mean this chicken was redonkyadonk good!!!  The outside was crunchy and light, spiced perfectly and the chicken was so juicy it literally burst when you bit into it!!  For the first time ever, I added hot sauce to my fried chicken, DAMN!!!  How did I not know it was SO GOOD!!

For the side dishes:  the yams, cheesey cheese macaroni and cheese, collard greens and sautéed baby leaf cabbage were the clear front-runners!  MS. Tootsie – I do not know what you do to collard greens, but I need to find out.  They danced on tongue!  I am embarrassed to say, I’ve only had them a few times in my life….. and NOW, I will be chasing a dragon! These were amazing.

Ok, now I gotta tell ya about these Yams.  FLAVA!  Seriously delicious, sweet, perfectly spiced and  baked to perfection!!

We each ate 2 rounds of main course.  We decided we were going to throw down with Ms. Tootsie – and we did!

OK – NOW FOR DESSERT!!! I need to tell you about the CUPCAKES for dessert!! We sampled 5:  Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate, Sweet Potato, 7-UP and Cherry 7-UP (yes they’re made w. 7-up).  HANDS DOWN winner SWEET POTATO cupcake!!!   When I ate the first bite, the heavens opened up and I could hear angels sing!!!  When I tell you peoples eye’s were rolling back in their heads, I’m not kidding!  The cream cheese icing was sweet and it was the perfect complement to the WARM….. yes, I said W A R M sweet potato cupcake!!!!

This was not my first experience with down home soul food, but it clearly was one of my favorites~!!!!
