Harry + David Baklava

Dear Foodiez,

Grammy Mame gave me a box of Harry & David Baklava for Thanksgiving!

In case you don’t know about Harry & David, they’re a specialty foods business that operates some retail stores and an amazing website!

You should know that I love baklava! Whenever I’m in a greek restaurant, I always get the baklava over the rice pudding! Hey, it’s not my fault there’s usually 2 desserts on a greek menu.

There’s a restaurant in Cape May, NJ called Sean’s – the baklava there was literally, the best I’ve ever had. (ps, they make if fresh daily!)

However, this Harry & David’s was very high on the list of amazing baklava. If you’re looking for a great food gift to send this holiday. Look no further!

Grammy Mame took me to lunch last week.  We decided to take in a flick and grab a nosh at Positano Coast.

I was dreaming of my train ride on the Amalfi Coast a few years ago!  There’s no food on the planet that’s any better than the food in Italy!

I had high hopes for everything, I found one dish that I loved and one that wasn’t so great.

Grammy Mame had the Paccheri Amatriciana (giant rigatoni, roma tomatoes, onions and pancetta).  She’s always had the luck of the draw when we go out to eat.  Inevitably, she picks the dish that is better than mine!  I was amazed at how perfectly the rigatoni was cooked.  In the dictionary next to Al Dente – there should be a picture of Positano Coast’s Paccheri Amatriciana!  The “gravy” as every true Italian in South Philly calls it, was perfection.  Bursting with flavor!  A true home run!

Now, my risotto on the other hand, was really disappointing.  It did have some yummstervillez seafood in it, but alas, the risotto was a little watery.  It was more like watery rice with seafood.  I like my risotto to have a little more creamy consistency.

We passed on dessert as we were running late for our movie.  The Ides of March was ok, but my boyfriend – Ryan Gossling – was amazing as always!

Dear Foodiez,

In a recent conversation with a Californian, I was informed that California is known as the land of fruits and nuts.  

Now that statement can be interpreted in a few different ways.  There’s the not so nice version where the fruits term refers to the large population of mo’s in San Fran and the nuts term refers to the left of center eccentrics.  Then there’s the version where the statement refers to all of the earthy crunch granola, sushi eating peeps.

Well, I decided to explore the land of fruits and nuts and check out the sushi and granola scene.

I popped into the South Beverly Grill and Honor Bar.  Yeah, there were some traditional sushi rolls on the menu, but the server told me they had a few really unique rolls that were special additions to the menu.  Naturally, I took him up on those rolls and was amazed!  This sushi was so fresh, so mild and amazing!  I started with a shrimp and avocado salad, so light and refreshing!

So if you’re ever in L.A – check out The South Beverly Grill to try their special sushi rolls, you’ll be glad you did!

Dear Foodiez,

I recently went on a trip to California, my hotel was in Beverly…….Hills that is!  Swimmin’ pools – movie stars!

I stayed at The Thompson Hotel.  This place is so over the posh, chic, fabulous that I kind of felt out of place.

This country boy who’s managed to grow up and live in the big city, still gets intimidated by too much chic.  I really did feel like a “Beverly Hillbillie”.

The hotel had a restaurant called Caulfield’s.  I decided to give it a go for breakfast.  I was shocked that they had an, “All American Breakfast” on the menu.  Eggs, homefries, toast, bacon, coffee and juice – all for the low price of $21.  LOL, I’m not sure what part of American they’re feeding with a $21 breakfast, but eh, I guess if you’re staying on Wilshire in Beverly Hills you’re not really worried about the price.

Now if you’re waiting for a review on the food – well – it was, in fact, eggs with bacon, home fries with far too many bell peppers in them, toast, juice and coffee.  There’s not too much that one can do to spruce up this very basic breakfast.

I can say that I didn’t eat many of the home fries, didn’t want all those carbs to cause bloat – as my hotel room had mirrored beams on the ceiling.  ;-)
